Image Paice - Marine Photography by Roger PaiceWhere it all began
I was born at an early age, my love of the photographic image and what can be achieved through this wonderful medium, started at the tender age of seven when I received Kodak Brownie 127 camera as a gift from my parents.
My first successful image, as I recall was a family portrait. Taken on the docks at Tiegnmouth Devon, a picture I still have and treasure to this day. In the background of this image is a picture of a small cargo vessel, an early indication of my life’s work and my continuing interest and development as a marine photographer.

The In between Years

Image Paice - Marine Photography by Roger Paice After a well travelled childhood (my father was in the Army) in 1959 our family arrived in West Wales. I left school & joined the Royal Air force. After graduating, I was stationed in Lincolnshire. RAF Waddington as an electrical technician on 44 squadron’s Vulcan V force. I developed a keen interest in Photography, travelling extensively across the World, but very soon realised I wanted to go to sea.
I purchased a discharge and was fortunate to obtain a position with the shipping company “Blue Star Line.” Travelling the world on modern general cargo vessels with my trusty Olympus was a wonderful opportunity to further develop my photographic skills. Eventually moving to larger vessels, in time I became an Electrical Officer working for various shipping companies. During this period I also worked in power stations as a commissioning engineer, and in Turkey as an assistant commissioning engineer.
In 1972 I left the world of Marine & Industry to start my own business as a photographer I decided to purchase the best Nikon 35mm equipment and set up as a generalist.

In 1975 I returned to sea, but kept up my photographic interest, lecturing photography during evening classes and looking after private clients. In 1980 with my new wife Julia I opened a picture gallery in the popular Welsh resort of Tenby. I had always dreamed of my own gallery and for 5 years we ran a successful business where our Land & seascapes were well received by the public. During this period we mastered the art of picture framing, we still provide this service to our discerning clients. After the birth of our daughter Lucy in 1985 we sold the gallery.

I continued to work at sea as an electrical engineer albeit on the short sea crossings from Wales to Ireland. In 1996 it was time for a change and I left my shipping company Stena Line. I had a one year sabbatical, once again I returned to my photography, this time working from my lovely old wooden boat on the Pembrokeshire coast and Milford waterway. During this time I travelled the world with my family.

In 1997 I started my company Roger Paice Associates Limited, I also became a contract engineer for a small, but success full engineering firm in West Wales. I progressed to ship repair & operations to some of the Worlds major shipping companies and ship repair yards. Recent contracts have taken me to China, Australia, Europe and the USA as well as several circumnavigations of the world on cruise ships.

In 2000 I decided to specialise in Marine Photography. Working with Lloyds of London supplying editorial images to the picture desk, Tugs Tankers Cruise ships and shipyards and that is where I have stayed.
